The energy regulator OFGEM (Office of Gas and Electricity Markets) recommends that energy brokers disclose commissions to SME customers.
But the reality that for the moment this is just a best practice and is not enforced in an unregulated sector of the industry.
In a recent review of the market, Ofgem found a minority of brokers engage in poor practices with opaque fees for brokerage services.e case, 50% of the total contract cost (around £24,000) comprised broker commission fees that the consumer was not made aware of pre-contract.
During our own research of the SME market, we were shocked to hear consistent stories of bad practice and found many cases where prices included commissions up to 7p per KWh, which was adding thousands of pounds to the monthly energy costs for a business. With little benefit to the customers beyond the initial comparison and switching process.

We encourage OFGEM to make it mandatory to disclose commission values to all customers, but this could take time to implement and for suppliers to commit to this request. But we are committed to open, honest, and transparent commissions. That’s why we have a fixed maximum commission value on all our energy supply products.

Why is this important
For decades we feel that SMEs of all sizes have had a poor deal when it comes to energy switching. With predominantly large call centres flooding the market with sales calls, trying to encourage customer to switch providers.
Which is great if this is beneficial to companies and helps save them time and money, but all too often large commission fees are hidden in the products offered. Sometimes these fees can be as much as 50% of the total bill value, and business are forced into paying the astronomical high fees for years in some cases.
It is for these reasons that we wanted to challenge the norm and demonstrate that there is a different way to help companies save time and money, a way in which they are in control, a way that they understand the value, and in a way that’s fair.
By offering a full commission disclosure are hope is to drive change and encourage others to think the same.
